Welcome to BJJ for Street Defense Level 1. The purpose of this curriculum is to help you or your students better understand how to use the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in actual self-defense situations. This curriculum teaches the proper strategy one should utilize when involved in a real-life altercation.  You will learn:   – Distance management/closing strategies  – Takedowns  – Stabilization strategies  – Transitions  – Strikes  – Submissions  If you are already a blue belt or above, many of these techniques will be familiar. However, the difference lies in when and how to implement them, especially with the consideration of strikes from both sides. When creating a fight strategy, several variables must be considered.  Level 1 Assumptions:  – There is only one opponent.  – The opponent is larger and stronger than you.  – The opponent is untrained in martial arts.  – You are an untrained striker.  – You have no control over the environment (e.g., concrete, wood floors).  As the curriculum progresses, additional assumptions will be introduced, such as multiple attackers, increased skill levels, and utilizing the environment to one’s advantage. The goal is to minimize damage from the opponent, fatigue them, achieve dominant positions, and finish the fight via submission. Strikes are integrated throughout, and their purpose is to safely close distance, achieve takedowns, advance to dominant positions, and set up submissions.  Curriculum Structure Standing As an untrained striker facing a larger opponent, two safe ranges exist: Too far away (the opponent can’t make contact). Too close (clinch, where the opponent can’t generate enough power for […]
